USA vs Ologeanu (Eastern District of Kentucky)
Background
Complicated case.
Definition of bitcoin
Still trying to see the ramifications. There are multiple cases: 0:18-cr-00005, 5:18-cr-00081, 5:19-cr-00010. According to documents jury trial set for August 7, 2019 at 9:00 am.
From a preliminary overview of some of the documents, this case do not touch the definition of Bitcoin/Blockchain. This document starting page 12 5-19-cr-10-Doc-4.pdf describe the relevant statutes and none are about 18 USC 1960. The only one that remotelly seems to corespond is the 18 USC 1956(h) but it refers to anything.
This case as far a Bitlicenses are concerned is not an important one expect that it illustrate the reach of the United States Law enforcement and Justice System. This is why it's important to define Bitcoin, Blockchain technology correctly so everyone know exactly where people stand. It is important that lawmaker give the right tools to law enforcement.
This case is interesting because it is full of international intrigue and it is worth following on a human level.
